CD32 AND ITS SOFTWARE

Updated 13/10/93
Welcome to our newest Software section. The section is
devoted entirely to CD32 compatible products.
We will be checking as many titles as possible to ensure that
we can support CD32 with existing CDTV titles as well as those
titles programmed specifically for CD32. A current list appears
at the bottom of this section. I have done this CD32 section in a
bit of a hurry, but I will tidy it up as soon as time allows.
We are also in contact with the various people developing
Software and Hardware for CD32 and we will be bringing them to you
as soon as possible.
If you are thinking of buying CD32, ORDER IT NOW!! STOCKS
WILL NOT LAST!!!
**** CD32 WHAT IS IT?, AND WHAT CAN IT DO? ****
As those of you who keep in contact with DON QUIXOTE on a
regular basis know, we have been talking about the new CD based
machine since March '93. Then several months later we stopped
talking about it. That wasn't because it is a lousy machine, but
because Commodore asked us politely not to mention their new
Secret CD32 and they would show it to us. We didn't mention that
it really wasn't such a secret and that we already had orders for
some. But we did get to see it and WOW!!!!

Now you can see why we are excited about CD32. Now read on for
some juicy previews into what can be done with CD32.
Movies on CD are just around the corner, and Amiga CD32 is waiting
to run them. The console has a Full Motion Video (FMV) expansion
port designed to house a special module which will go on sale
around Christmas. It will retail for under $400.00 ($399.00
knowing Commodore) and will, hopefully be bundled with a FMV CD.
[Ed: FMV = Full Motion Video]
This means of-course, Films on CD, Music CD's with Video,
Interactive movies and Games.
** ALL ABOUT MPEG **
MPEG is an acronym for Motion Picture Experts Group and is an
International standard for "MTV - like" Video CDs. A single CD
can hold 74 minutes of video and sound/Full screen Full Motion
Video and CD quality Audio and is better than VHS quality.
MPEG for Amiga CD32 is in the form of a small cartridge that plugs
through a slot on the back of the console and sits flush. MPEG
Genlocks Amiga graphics over MPEG images. MPEG is compatible with
Phillips "White Book" FMV cartridge for CD-I. It plays new
VideoCD discs for Music Videos and Movies.
The companies that are now planning to support this new format
include:
SONY (CBS, COLUMBIA, TRISTAR),
MATSUSHITA (NATIONAL) (MCA, UNIVERSAL)
GOLDSTAR & SAMSUNG
JVC (Players and Karaoke CD's)
PARAMOUNT (Star Trek Movies, Godfather Movies, Indecent Proposal and
others. The movies will retail at approx $35.00.
As you can see from the above "Partners" that Commodore have taken
on, CD32 is not going to be another Amiga struggling against the
ignorant hordes who think that an IBM Compatible is an up to date
"wonder machine" and "Windows" is the ultimate operating system.
CD32 is Commodore's chance to protect the Amiga from DEATH.
Piracy is without doubt killing the Amiga and many programming
teams are leaving the Format behind. CD and in particular, CD32
will hopefully prevent this from happening as well as reviving the
current Amiga market, with hopefully CD32 compatible CDROM drives
for the current Amiga range.
I just hope Commodore will get its marketing right this time.
CDTV is a fantastic machine and Commodore's inability to market it
made it fail. If Commodore doesn't get off their backside now and
promote CD32 heavily it will die also. If it does, then I
believe, Commodore will also die, as it would have lost the
support of just about everybody. However DON QUIXOTE will do our
best to support the machine and Software. We will start
developing add-ons as well as, at the moment, 2 Pieces of
Software. Our only concern is that Commodore in a desperate
attempt to make CD32 sell, will bend over backwards to support
Brashes and other Chain stores and forget about the Commodore
retailers who will end up being the people actually supporting the
product and the Users. Time will tell. Unfortunately, at the
moment, it would appear that Commodore Australia is doing exactly
that.
CD32 is going to be hard to get initially, as Commodore will as
usual underestimate the market. From what I understand of the
numbers being brought to Australia, it will be hard to get decent
stocks this side of Christmas. On the first day of release in the
UK this week, the only piece of Software (James Pond 2) that was
ready (apart from the bundled titles, Diggers, Oscar) sold out on
the first day. Lets hope this doesn't happen in Australia. ***
STOP PRESS *** Since writing this, I have been advised that
Diggers (Lemmings type game) and Oscar will probably be bundled
with CD32 in Australia also.
For those of you who are thinking of importing the CD32 direct
from the UK, and who hasn't?, think about it very, very, hard.
Commodore now keeps a record of serial numbers for warranty
purposes, if something goes wrong, and look at the A1200 problems,
you could be in strife. The CDROM drive for CDTV as a spare part
is still over $1,200.00 to buy!!!
So why should people buy CD32 and not Sega Mega CD?
Sega can only display 64 colours, whereas CD32 can display 256,000
on screen simultaneously and has a total pallette of 16.8 Million
colours.
CD32 comes with 2 MB Ram, 15 times more than Sega Mega CD, and
CD32 has a double speed drive.
This of course means that developers of sophisticated console
games will love CD32.

required to use the program on CD32.
