  14.         Welcome to our newest Software section.  The section is
  15.     devoted entirely to CD32 compatible products.
  16.  
  17.         We will be checking as many titles as possible to ensure that
  18.     we can support CD32 with existing CDTV titles as well as those
  19.     titles programmed specifically for CD32.  A current list appears
  20.     at the bottom of this section.  I have done this CD32 section in a
  21.     bit of a hurry, but I will tidy it up as soon as time allows.

  23.         We are also in contact with the various people developing
  24.     Software and Hardware for CD32 and we will be bringing them to you
  25.     as soon as possible.

  34.         As those of you who keep in contact with DON QUIXOTE on a
  35.     regular basis know, we have been talking about the new CD based
  36.     machine since March '93.  Then several months later we stopped
  37.     talking about it.  That wasn't because it is a lousy machine, but
  38.     because Commodore asked us politely not to mention their new
  39.     Secret CD32 and they would show it to us.  We didn't mention that
  40.     it really wasn't such a secret and that we already had orders for
  41.     some.  But we did get to see it and WOW!!!!

  122.     Now you can see why we are excited about CD32.  Now read on for
  123.     some juicy previews into what can be done with CD32.
  124.  
  125.     Movies on CD are just around the corner, and Amiga CD32 is waiting
  126.     to run them.  The console has a Full Motion Video (FMV) expansion
  127.     port designed to house a special module which will go on sale
  128.     around Christmas.  It will retail for under $400.00 ($399.00
  129.     knowing Commodore) and will, hopefully be bundled with a FMV CD.

  133.     This means of-course, Films on CD, Music CD's with Video,
  134.     Interactive movies and Games.

  137.                          ** ALL ABOUT MPEG **
  139.     MPEG is an acronym for Motion Picture Experts Group and is an
  140.     International standard for "MTV - like" Video CDs.  A single CD
  141.     can hold 74 minutes of video and sound/Full screen Full Motion
  142.     Video and CD quality Audio and is better than VHS quality.
  143.  
  144.     MPEG for Amiga CD32 is in the form of a small cartridge that plugs
  145.     through a slot on the back of the console and sits flush.  MPEG
  146.     Genlocks Amiga graphics over MPEG images.  MPEG is compatible with
  147.     Phillips "White Book" FMV cartridge for CD-I.  It plays new
  148.     VideoCD discs for Music Videos and Movies.
  149.  
  150.     The companies that are now planning to support this new format
  151.     include:
  152.  
  153.                     SONY (CBS, COLUMBIA, TRISTAR),
  154.                 MATSUSHITA (NATIONAL) (MCA, UNIVERSAL)
  155.                           GOLDSTAR & SAMSUNG
  156.                     JVC (Players and Karaoke CD's)
  157.  PARAMOUNT (Star Trek Movies, Godfather Movies, Indecent Proposal and
  158.           others.  The movies will retail at approx $35.00.
  159.  
  160.     As you can see from the above "Partners" that Commodore have taken
  161.     on, CD32 is not going to be another Amiga struggling against the
  162.     ignorant hordes who think that an IBM Compatible is an up to date
  163.     "wonder machine" and "Windows" is the ultimate operating system.
  164.     CD32 is Commodore's chance to protect the Amiga from DEATH.
  165.     Piracy is without doubt killing the Amiga and many programming
  166.     teams are leaving the Format behind.  CD and in particular, CD32
  167.     will hopefully prevent this from happening as well as reviving the
  168.     current Amiga market, with hopefully CD32 compatible CDROM drives
  169.     for the current Amiga range.
  170.  
  171.     I just hope Commodore will get its marketing right this time.
  172.     CDTV is a fantastic machine and Commodore's inability to market it
  173.     made it fail.  If Commodore doesn't get off their backside now and
  174.     promote CD32 heavily it will die also.  If it does, then I
  175.     believe, Commodore will also die, as it would have lost the
  176.     support of just about everybody.  However DON QUIXOTE will do our
  177.     best to support the machine and Software.  We will start
  178.     developing add-ons as well as, at the moment, 2 Pieces of
  179.     Software.  Our only concern is that Commodore in a desperate
  180.     attempt to make CD32 sell, will bend over backwards to support
  181.     Brashes and other Chain stores and forget about the Commodore
  182.     retailers who will end up being the people actually supporting the
  183.     product and the Users.  Time will tell.  Unfortunately, at the
  184.     moment, it would appear that Commodore Australia is doing exactly
  185.     that.
  186.  
  187.     CD32 is going to be hard to get initially, as Commodore will as
  188.     usual underestimate the market.  From what I understand of the
  189.     numbers being brought to Australia, it will be hard to get decent
  190.     stocks this side of Christmas.  On the first day of release in the
  191.     UK this week, the only piece of Software (James Pond 2) that was
  192.     ready (apart from the bundled titles, Diggers, Oscar) sold out on
  193.     the first day.  Lets hope this doesn't happen in Australia.  ***
  194.     STOP PRESS *** Since writing this, I have been advised that
  195.     Diggers (Lemmings type game) and Oscar will probably be bundled
  196.     with CD32 in Australia also.
  197.  
  198.     For those of you who are thinking of importing the CD32 direct
  199.     from the UK, and who hasn't?, think about it very, very, hard.
  200.     Commodore now keeps a record of serial numbers for warranty
  201.     purposes, if something goes wrong, and look at the A1200 problems,
  202.     you could be in strife.  The CDROM drive for CDTV as a spare part
  203.     is still over $1,200.00 to buy!!!
  204.  
  205.     So why should people buy CD32 and not Sega Mega CD?
  207.     Sega can only display 64 colours, whereas CD32 can display 256,000
  208.     on screen simultaneously and has a total pallette of 16.8 Million
  209.     colours.
  210.  
  211.     CD32 comes with 2 MB Ram, 15 times more than Sega Mega CD, and
  212.     CD32 has a double speed drive.
  213.     
  214.     This of course means that developers of sophisticated console
  215.     games will love CD32.
